The Meatrix

I thought that the Meatrix episodes were cheesy but a little entertaining.  I think that it was a good method to include comic relief with such a serious topic.  I think that the worst thing about factory farming that the video clips showed was the antibiotic aspect.  Overusing antibiotics cause bacteria to become resistant to the drugs.  This could make a lot of people sick in the future, and could even result in an epidemic.

During the video, I thought of my hometown and the grocery stores there.  My dad is always excited when he gets good cuts of meat from Costco.  The short films made me wonder if these "pristine" meats are actually good quality.  I also thought about the farms around my house.  I've seen a lot of houses that raise chickens, cows, or goats.  I've never seen anything like what they showed on the film, but I don't doubt that they exist.

  1. I definitely agree on the "cheesy" qualities of the video haha and the fact that the cheesiness seemed to make them entertaining! For such a serious topic, comic relief seems to be necessary to get viewers to understand because many would be turned away by something as serious as Food, Inc. I also agree that antibiotic usage is a huge issue. Little do we know, we very well could be approaching an epidemic that antibiotics can no longer fix thanks to the meats that we are eating.

Similarly to your story about your dad, mine has always done the same thing! I would also be surprised to find out exactly where the meat he claims is the best available is coming from and if I did find out, would I still be as quick to eat it?

  2. I agree with Kaitlyn when it comes to the use of antibiotics. I think it is a terrible idea that is only going to get worse. We currently have no other weapon against bacterial infections, and the bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to that weapon. I also know that the corporations that own the factory farms put them way out in the country. They do this to stay away from the public, they don't want you to know what they do, and how dirty these farms really are.
